Dyson V7 (SV11): filter, battery and pulsing fixes
For owners of the V7 Animal, Motorhead, Absolute, Fluffy and Trigger. Check whether yours has a purple post filter on the back, because that decides how many filters you wash.
Confirm it's a V7
The V7's model code is SV11 (HH11 is the handheld-only version). On machines with a screw-in battery, Dyson prints the serial number on the back of the battery pack at the base of the handle. If it isn't on the battery, look behind the bin: pull the red lever back, then lift up to release the cyclone.
- MAX is a slide switch on top of the machine. The V6 has a MAX button instead.
- The bin empties with a red lever: hold the handle, pull the lever back and lift.
- One or two filters. Some V7s have only the top filter; others also have a purple post filter on the back.
The V7 Advanced (SV37) is a different machine with different parts and isn't covered on this page.
Wash or replace the filters
Dyson's manuals say to wash the filters with cold water at least once a month, more often if you vacuum fine dust or use the machine heavily.
Top pre-filter
- Lift the pre-filter straight out of the top of the cyclone.
- Run cold water over the outside until the water runs clear. Cold water only, no detergent.
- Squeeze and twist it with both hands to get the water out.
- Lay it on its side and leave it to dry completely for at least 24 hours. No dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, oven, microwave or open flame.
- Drop it back into the top of the cyclone once it's fully dry.
Purple post filter (if fitted)
- Twist the rear filter counterclockwise to the open position and pull it away from the machine.
- Rinse the inside under cold running water, turning it so every pleat gets wet.
- Tap it against the side of the sink to knock out debris. Repeat 4 or 5 times until it's clean.
- Stand it upright, top facing up, and leave it to dry completely for at least 24 hours.
- Line it up in the open position and twist clockwise until it clicks.
Pulsing and blockages
Dyson's V7 manual says the motor pulses when there's a blockage, and after pulsing a number of times it may cut out. Dyson lists three causes: a blockage, a stuck bin inlet, or filters that need washing.
- Take the vacuum off the charger and let it cool. Keep your fingers off the trigger.
- Remove the clear bin and look into the main body inlet.
- Remove the wand and check both ends. Clear anything inside by hand or with something blunt, never anything sharp.
- Check the neck and underside of the cleaner head. If you can't clear it, remove the brush bar (see the brush bar section).
- Refit everything and switch on. Note that Dyson's warranty doesn't cover clearing blockages.
To check the main body, remove the clear bin and cyclone: hold the handle, pull the red lever back and lift, then release the bin.
Clean the brush bar
V7 floor heads release their brush bars with a coin. See the floor head guide for the Direct Drive and Fluffy heads.
Safety: Take the vacuum off the charger and detach the head before touching the brush bar.
Replace the battery
The V7 pack is held by screws you reach after removing the clear bin. Dyson's battery page includes its own video of the swap and recommends running its troubleshooting first.
- Phillips screwdriver
- Take the vacuum off the charger and remove the wand or tool.
- Remove the clear bin and cyclone to expose the battery screws.
- Remove every screw holding the pack to the motor unit, including any at the back of the handle above the battery.
- Pull the battery down and out of the handle.
- Keep your finger off the trigger while you fit the new pack, refit all the screws snugly and charge it fully.
Safety: Only fit a genuine Dyson pack. Don't charge or use a pack that is swollen, cracked, leaking or hot, and take old packs to a battery recycling drop-off, never the trash.
What the lights mean

| In use | Solid blue | On |
| In use | Flashing blue | No power: charge the battery |
| In use | Flashing amber | Temporary fault, such as too hot or too cold |
| In use | Solid amber | Fault: contact Dyson if it persists |
| In use | Flashing red | Fault: contact Dyson |
| On the charger | Solid blue | Charging |
| On the charger | Flashing blue | Not charging: refit the charger or try another outlet |
| On the charger | Off | Charging complete |
| On the charger | Flashing red | Fault: contact Dyson |
Pulsing on and off
Clear blockages, free the bin inlet and wash the filters. See pulsing or cutting out.
Short run time
MAX mode runs about 5 to 6 minutes, so compare in normal mode. Wash the filters and clear blockages; if run time is still short, the battery is worn.
