Dyson V6: filter, battery and cut-out fixes
For owners of the V6 Absolute, Animal, Motorhead, Fluffy and Cord-free. The V6 cuts out when it overheats instead of pulsing, and counterfeit V6 batteries have been linked to fires.
Confirm it's a V6
Dyson's V6 model codes are SV03, SV04, SV05, SV06, SV07 and SV09 (HH08 is the handheld-only version). On machines with a screw-in battery, Dyson prints the serial number on the back of the battery pack at the base of the handle. The SV03 manual says the rating plate is on the main body behind the clear bin.
Three things set the V6 apart from the V7 and V8, which look similar:
- MAX is a button, not a slide switch. Hold the trigger and press it; it lights blue when MAX is on.
- The bin empties with a red button by the bin. Press once to open the base, twice to release the bin. V7 and V8 use a red lever you pull back.
- It cuts out to cool down when blocked or overheated, instead of pulsing.
Wash or replace the filter
Dyson's manual says to wash the filter with cold water at least once a month.
- Lift the pre-filter straight out of the top of the cyclone.
- Run cold water over the outside until the water runs clear. Cold water only, no detergent.
- Squeeze and twist it with both hands to get the water out.
- Lay it on its side and leave it to dry completely for at least 24 hours. No dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, oven, microwave or open flame.
- Drop it back into the top of the cyclone once it's fully dry.
If it cuts out: thermal cut-out and blockages
The V6 has a self-resetting thermal cut-out. If something blocks the tools or nozzle, the motor overheats and switches off. Dyson says to leave it to cool for 1 to 2 hours before checking the filter or looking for blockages.
- Take the vacuum off the charger and let it cool. Keep your fingers off the trigger.
- Remove the clear bin and look into the main body inlet.
- Remove the wand and check both ends. Clear anything inside by hand or with something blunt, never anything sharp.
- Check the neck and underside of the cleaner head. If you can't clear it, remove the brush bar (see the brush bar section).
- Refit everything and switch on. Note that Dyson's warranty doesn't cover clearing blockages.
On the V6 floor tool, a coin loosens the screw marked with a padlock to take the base plate off, and the fastener with the same padlock mark releases the brush bar.
Clean the brush bar
V6 heads release the brush bar with a coin on the fastener marked with a padlock. Steps and part numbers are in the floor head guide.
Safety: Take the vacuum off the charger and detach the head before touching the brush bar.
Replace the battery safely
The V6 battery is held by two screws. Dyson recommends running its online troubleshooting before you buy, to be sure the battery is the problem, and its manual says to contact Dyson if the battery needs replacing.
Counterfeit V6 batteries have caught fire. On January 4, 2024 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission told owners to stop using ZAUTNKN.INC replacement packs for V6 vacuums, sold on Amazon for $15 to $40, after three fire reports and one smoke-inhalation report. The packs weren't compliant with the UL 1642 battery standard. Read the CPSC warning.
- Phillips screwdriver (iFixit uses a #2)
- Take the vacuum off the charger and remove the wand or tool.
- Remove the clear bin. One screw sits in the lower recess the bin exposes.
- Find the second screw farther back, near the handle. Remove both.
- Pull the battery straight down and out of the bottom of the handle.
- Keep your finger off the trigger and hands clear of the inlet while you slide the new pack in, because the trigger switch is in the battery and the motor can start as it seats.
- Refit both screws snugly, refit the bin and charge fully.
Safety: Only fit a genuine Dyson pack. Don't charge or use a pack that is swollen, cracked, leaking or hot, and take old packs to a battery recycling drop-off, never the trash.
What the lights mean
From the V6 operating manual (SV03).
| When | Light | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger pressed | Solid blue | On |
| Trigger pressed | Flashing blue | No power: charge the battery |
| Trigger pressed | Flashing amber | Temporary fault, such as too hot or too cold |
| Trigger pressed | Flashing red | Fault: contact Dyson |
| On the charger | Solid blue | Charging |
| On the charger | Off | Charging complete |
| On the charger | Solid amber | Not charging, temporary fault such as too hot or too cold |
| On the charger | Flashing red | Fault: contact Dyson |
Stops suddenly and won't restart
Thermal cut-out. Let it cool for 1 to 2 hours, then wash the filter and check for blockages.
Amber light
Usually temperature. Bring the vacuum and battery to room temperature and try again.
Short run time
Wash the filter and clear blockages first. If run time is still short, the battery is worn; fit a genuine 967810-23.
